چکیده

ences can be quite large, especially for housing. For example, according to 1990 Census data, the median housing price in New York is more than three times that of the median housing price in Cleveland.2 The question addressed in this paper is whether the common practice of ignoring local price variation in labor supply studies is as innocuous as has generally been assumed. In standard economic theory, labor supply decisions depend on the complete set of prices: the wages and the prices of relevant consumption goods. Nonetheless, as Abbott and Ashenfelter (1976) noted some 30 years ago, economists generally have found it a useful abstraction, in both theoretical and empirical work, to ignore prices other than wages in labor supply studies. For example, none of the empirical results on labor supply discussed in the prominent reviews of Pencavel (1986), Killingsworth and Heckman (1986), or Blundell and MaCurdy (1999) are derived by procedures that account for variation in any price other than wages.1 However, most empirical work on labor does use national datasets of individuals who live in different locations and therefore face different prices for locally priced goods. These price differIn standard economic theory, labor supply decisions depend on the complete set of prices: wages and the prices of relevant consumption goods. Nonetheless, most theoretical and empirical work in labor supply studies ignore prices other than wages. We address the question of whether the common practice of ignoring local price variation in labor supply studies is as innocuous as generally assumed. We describe a simple model to demonstrate that the effects of wage and nonlabor income on labor supply typically differ by location. In particular, we show that the derivative of the labor supply with respect to nonlabor income is independent of price only when the labor supply takes a form based on an implausible separability condition. Empirical evidence demonstrates that the effect of price on labor supply is not a simple “up-or-down shift” that would be required to meet the separability condition in our key proposition. Housing Wealth, Property Taxes and Labor Supply among the Elderly

We investigate the relationship between housing wealth, property taxes, and elderly labor supply. Using twenty years of restricted access data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) containing plausibly exogenous variation in housing wealth from the recent boom/bust cycle and MSA-specific housing price indexes, we estimate longitudinal and difference-in-difference models. Our findings sugge...

How Do Industries and Firms Respond to Changes in Local Labor Supply?

How Do Industries and Firms Respond to Changes in Local Labor Supply? In this paper, we investigate how changes in the skill mix of local labor supply are absorbed by the economy. We distinguish between three adjustment mechanisms: through factor prices, through an expansion in the size of those production units that use the more abundant skill group more intensively, and through more intensive...

A discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm with local search for a production-based two-echelon single-vendor multiple-buyer supply chain

This paper formulates a two-echelon single-producer multi-buyer supply chain model, while a single product is produced and transported to the buyers by the producer. The producer and the buyers apply vendor-managed inventory mode of operation. It is assumed that the producer applies economic production quantity policy, which implies a constant production rate at the producer. The operational pa...

اثر هدفمند‌سازی یارانه‌ها بر فقر و توزیع درآمد در ایران: مدل سازی تعادل عمومی عرضه کار

Targeted subsidies plan affects income distribution and poverty through several channels. On most of the analyzies, changes on labor supply are not considered. Increasing nominal income alone after paying cash subsidy rule can reduce labor supply in targeted subsidies. This issue may decrease effect of targeted subsidies. In this research by CGE we calculate the result of impact of energy price...

To Work or Not To Work? Male Earnings and Female Labor Force Participation in India

Despite economic growth, fertility reductions, and increases in female educational attainment, overall female labor force participation in India declined from 35 percent to 27 percent between 1999 and 2012. I examine the degree to which this puzzling decline can be attributed to an increase in earnings of married males. I first show that between 1999 and 2012, districts that experience a relati...
